Specials have the same powers as full time RCIPS officers. Unsurprisingly, this requires a thorough grounding many aspects of policing. Each Special is required to attend an extensive training course, often during evenings and weekends.

This training provides participants with the basic skills required to be an officer such as: powers of arrest, how to prepare evidence for court, officer safety, dealing with awkward people and sensitive situations and report and statement writing.

Other training includes certifications in baton, handcuff and other necessary policing tools.
